How to use TabTangle

TabTangle is for restaurant and group meal bills where an equal split would feel unfair. Use it when people ordered different items, shared dishes unevenly, or one person paid the whole bill and needs a clean recovery plan.

Quick start

  1. Add the people at the table and record who already paid.
  2. Enter each line item from the bill.
  3. Assign each item to one person or several people.
  4. Tap share chips to cycle 0 → 1 → 2 → 3 when a shared item was uneven.
  5. Add tax, tip, service, and any discount.
  6. Review the final totals, settlement plan, and copy-ready note.

Common table scenarios

One shared appetizer

Assign the item only to the people who actually shared it. If one person clearly had more, give them a higher share count.

One person only drank

Only assign their drink. They can still absorb their share of tax, tip, or service depending on the fee rule you choose.

One person paid the whole bill

Put the full amount in that person’s “Already paid” field. TabTangle will show who should reimburse them and by how much.

Discount or coupon

Enter the discount once. Then decide whether it should return proportionally to item share or evenly across the group.

Someone joined late or left early

Only include them in the items they actually touched. The result stays tied to the real bill instead of the full headcount.

Troubleshooting

  • If totals feel wrong, look for an item with no shares or a duplicated charge.
  • If the “difference” line is not zero, the “Already paid” column does not yet match the full bill total.
  • If a shared dish feels unfair, raise the share count for the people who consumed more instead of forcing a flat split.
  • For very simple equal splits, you can still use TabTangle by assigning all shared items evenly and choosing equal fees.
